Approval of tires for agricultural vehicles

UNECE Regulation No. 106 concerns new tires intended primarily, but not exclusively, for agricultural and forestry Vehicles (motor vehicles of category T), agricultural machinery (a engine or towed) and agricultural trailers.

They are identified by speed category symbols corresponding to speeds up to 65 km/h (speed symbol ‘D’).
The Regulation does not apply to types of tires intended primarily for other purposes, such as:

a) Construction (tyres marked with «industrial», «IND», «R4» or «F3»);
b) Soil moving machines;
c) Industrial trucks and lift trucks

APPROVAL APPLICATION:

The application for the Approval of a type of tire for agricultural or forestry services must be submitted by the holder of the trademark or trade mark or by his duly authorized representative. The application must specify:

  • The tire size designation;
  • The trademark or trade name;
  • The category of use;
  • The structure;
  • The speed category symbol;
  • The load capacity index of the tyre, specifying for tires intended for agricultural machinery that for traction application (only) and that for trailer application, if any;
  • If the tire is equipped with an inner tube;
  • The tyre/rim configuration;
  • The measuring circle and the test circle;
  • The rims on which the tire can be mounted;
  • The inflation pressure (bar or kPa) for measurements;
  • The cold inflation pressure not to be exceeded for bead seating when fitting the tyre, in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements for the type of tyre;
  • The test pressure in kPa (or in bar).

At the request of the Approval Authority, the tire manufacturer must also submit a complete technical documentation for each type of tire, containing drawings or photographs to identify the tread pattern and the carcass of the inflated tire mounted on the measuring rim and showing the relevant dimensions of the type submitted for the Approval. Also enclose the test report issued by an authorized testing laboratory or a sample of the tire type, depending on what the Approval Authority requests.

TIRE TESTING:

A tire passes the test if, after being subjected to the relative burst resistance test, it does not show any detachment of the tread, plies or cords, nor any breakage of the beads or cords. The tire must not be used for other tests. A tire passes the load/speed test if at the end of the test it presents a knock out due to the specific conditions of the test. If the tire manufacturer produces a range of tires it is not necessary to carry out tests on every type of tire in the range.

MODIFICATION OF THE TYPE OF TIRE AND EXTENSION OF APPROVAL:

Any modification to the type of tire must be notified to the administrative department which issued the Aproval. This service may consider it unlikely that the modifications made will have appreciable negative effects and that in any case the tire still satisfies the requirements; or request a new test report from the technical service responsible for carrying out the tests.

A modification of the tread pattern does not require repeating the tests of these Regulations.

Confirmation or refusal of approval, specifying the modifications, shall be notified by the procedure specified in the preceding paragraph to the Parties to the Agreement which apply these Regulations.

The Competent Authority deciding on the extension of the Approval shall assign a serial number to such extension and inform the other Parties to the 1958 Agreement which apply these Regulations by means of a communication form conforming to the model.

CONFORMITY OF PRODUCTION

Tires approved in accordance with these Regulations must be manufactured in such a way as to conform to the approved type.

The Authority which has granted type approval may at any time verify the conformity control methods applied in each production facility. For each production plant, these checks will usually have a two-year deadline.
