Test and Type Approval for Vehicles head restraint - UNECE R 25.

‘Head restraint’ means a device whose function is to limit the rearward displacement of an adult occupant’s head in relation to his torso in order to reduce the danger of injury to the cervical vertebrae of that occupant in the event of an accident.

The application for Approval shall be submitted by the holder of the trade name or mark of the seat or the head restraint or by his duly accredited representative.

For the application of the Approval It’s requested a detailed description of the head restraint, specifying in particular the nature of the padding material or materials and, where applicable, the position and specifications of the braces and anchorage pieces for the type or types of seats for which approval of the head restraint is sought.

the Regulation No. 25 is divided into the following parts:

  • The Scope;
  • Definitions;
  • The application for Approval;
  • Markings;
  • Approval;
  • General specifications;
  • Laboratory Tests;

  • Penalties for non-conformity of production;
  • Modification and extension of Approval of a type of head restraint;
  • Instructions;
  • Production definitely discontinued;
  • Transitional provisions;
  • Names and addresses of technical services responsible for conducting Approval tests and of administrative departments.

The presence of the head restraint shall not be an additional cause of danger to occupants of the Vehicle. In particular it shall not in any position of use exhibit any dangerous roughness or sharp edge liable to increase the risk or seriousness of injury to the occupants. Parts of the head restraint which are situated in the impact zone defined below shall be capable of dissipating energy.

Head restraint systems are important safety devices because rear-end crashes are common in the real world. you’re more likely to need your head restraint in a crash than almost any other safety device when your vehicle is struck from behind the seat is pushed forward and that pushes on your back as it does so your head tends to lag behind until the head restraint catches up to it that puts forces on the neck to reduce the risk of neck injury.

Undergoing testing, we first looks at the geometry of the head restraint as the head restraint tall enough is it close enough to the back of the head that we can expect it to protect even taller occupants if not we rate the head restraint as poor overall.

If the restraint is acceptable for protecting taller occupants then we do a sled test in which we simulate what would happen if you were stopped in traffic and another car hit you from behind doing about 32km/h we then look at the measures on the test dummy.

In specific we analyse what happens in rear impacts we look at how hard the seat pushes on the torso we look at how quickly the head restraint gets to the head and supports it and we also look at the forces that we can measure on the dummy’s neck based on these measurements we give the seat a rating of good acceptable marginal or poor.
