iso/sae 21434: Cybersecurity engineering in road vehicles

In recent years, the technological evolution of vehicles and their components has required common rules to manage information security in the automotive sector. For this reason, in August 2021, a standard entirely dedicated to the cyber security of vehicles was released: ISO / SAE 21434.

This ISO can be compared with other standards already existing in the automotive sector, in particular with the safety standard ISO 26262 and with the UNECE R155 Regulation.

2022 will be the year that will see cybersecurity forcefully enter the automotive industry (and beyond). In fact, over the last decade, there have been many (and constantly increasing) demonstrations of cyber attacks against vehicles.

The growth of connected vehicles is expected to increase the need for advanced automotive cybersecurity.

The cybersecurity market in the automotive industry generated revenue of $ 1.26 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach approximately $ 6.03 billion by 2029, according to a BIS Research Global Automotive Cybersecurity Market intelligence report.

The ECE Regulation No. 155 approved by the EU in 2022 defines a roadmap and obligations for car makers regarding cyber security.

The roadmap indicates that the requirements must be applied by June 2022 for the homologation of all the new models that will enter the market from that moment, and from June 2024 for all the cars that will be registered in the countries where the UNECE standards are applied, all the European Union in particular.

UNECE has, among other things, approved a second ECE Regulation No. 156 which regulates, again in the automotive field, the safety of software updates in “over the air” mode through the Software Update Management System (SUMS).
