European vehicle type approval (WVTA)

Technical harmonization in the EU is based on the Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) system. Under WVTA, a manufacturer can obtain certification for a type of vehicle in one EU country and market it throughout the EU without further testing.

When a vehicle has been approved under the WVTA, it means that it has been assessed and deemed compliant with applicable European regulations, both in terms of passenger and pedestrian safety and environmental impact.

Thanks to our close collaboration with various Approval Authorities, we are able to manage vehicle approvals extremely quickly and efficiently.

We are accredited as an Inspection Body, in accordance with ISO 17020:2012, as a Certification Body, in accordance with ISO 17021-1:2015, and designated Technical Service by the Approval Authority of the Republic of San Marino (E57), the Swedish Transport Agency – Transportstyrelsen (E5/e5), and the National Standards Authority of Ireland (E24 / e24).

The approval process involves a series of tests and evaluations that must be successfully completed before the vehicle can obtain approval. These tests include collision tests, emissions tests, stability assessments, and much more, depending on the type and category of the vehicle.

Obtaining European vehicle approval allows manufacturers to market their products in all EU countries without having to undergo additional national approval procedures. This significantly simplifies the process of marketing vehicles in the European market, contributing to the free movement of goods and the standardization of safety and environmental requirements within the EU.

Vehicle categories M, N, O, and L are international standards used to classify different types of vehicles based on their function and primary use. Here’s a brief explanation of each category:

  • Category M: This category includes vehicles designed and built for the transportation of passengers. It includes vehicles such as cars, buses, minivans, and minibuses. Vehicles in this category are primarily intended for the transportation of people.
  • Category N: This category includes vehicles designed and built for the transportation of goods and for towing trailers. It includes vehicles such as vans, trucks, lorries, road tractors, and trailers. Vehicles in this category are primarily intended for the transportation of goods.
  • Category O: This category includes specialized vehicles designed and built for specific purposes. It includes vehicles such as agricultural and forestry machinery, construction machinery, agricultural tractors, and industrial use vehicles. These vehicles are designed for specific purposes and often have unique features and requirements.
  • Category L: This category includes motor vehicles with three or four wheels designed and built for the transportation of people and goods. It includes vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds, quadricycles, and microcars. These vehicles are primarily used for individual transportation or for small loads and may have one or two seating positions.
